  33.     The controller and (more importantly) controller code can have a
  34. MAJOR effect on performance, even if the same datapump (including all the
  35. needed chips and code) are identicle.  The DAA (part that connects the
  36. datapump to the phone line) can also have a fairly major effect on the
  37. performance.  In fact, just about everything in the modem can affect the
  38. performance of it, even something as simple as the layout of the PCB. 
  39. That being said, to answer the original question, the Motorola Power and
  40. LifeStyle mdoems use exactly the same hardware except for the FlashROM,
  41. and use exactly the same DSP and controller code except for the extra
  42. features of the Power (eg Distinctive Ring, remote configuration, etc.),
  43. so they're performance should be identicle.
